This document provides both a strategy on the collection of monitoring data, concentrating on numbers of waterbirds and the environmental conditions of their sites, and provides a practical manual showing how to carry out this monitoring, both for coordinators and fieldworkers.

The purpose of this monitoring strategy is to improve the level of knowledge for conservation and management through intensified, expanded and harmonized monitoring of waterbird species and their sites using IBA and IWC methodology.

Within the Wadden Sea Flyway Initiative (WSFI), the monitoring project has been carried out in close cooperation with the project on capacity building.
