Next activities towards the establishment of a Densu Delta Wetland Education Centre

2024 | Ghana

The Densu Wetland in Ghana, a Ramsar sites and important wetland area for waterbirds is threatened by ongoing encroachment. Recent meetings organized by the Centre for Biodiversity Conservation Research (CBCR) in relation to the proposed Densu Delta Ramsar Wetland Education Centre have highlighted the urgent need to protect the increasingly degraded wetlands. Stakeholders agreed that increased public education is crucial to mitigate the negative impact of human activities. Community visits and consultations demonstrated strong commitment for a new wetland centre and endorsed efforts to begin awareness-raising campaigns.

A key stakeholder meeting brought together representatives from government, private sectors, and local communities to align on priorities and assess the strengths and challenges of the project. A SWOT analysis was conducted, and the Solo Forest, known for its ecological and cultural significance, was explored as a potential site. Community leaders provided strategic feedback and pledged their support, emphasizing the potential for ecotourism and youth employment opportunities linked to the centre.

As part of outreach efforts, the CBCR team visited local schools to educate students on wetland conservation. Engagement sessions successfully raised awareness about the importance of the wetland ecosystem and its biodiversity. Activities were also held in celebration of World Wetlands Day, supported by the Ghana Wildlife Society and the Forestry Commission, further strengthening the case for establishing the education centre.
