Abundance monitoring of waterbirds at critical sites in the East Atlantic Flyway with a focus on Western Africa

This document provides guidance for monitoring waterbird abundance at critical sites along the East Atlantic Flyway, with a particular focus on Western Africa. Developed as part of the CREAF Monitoring Toolbox, it outlines recommended approaches for monitoring non-breeding and breeding populations, including coordinated counts and more intensive monitoring at selected sites and breeding colonies. The guidance also addresses the importance of standardised protocols, reliable data management and trained observers to support consistent monitoring and strengthen the evidence base for conservation and site management across the flyway.
