Opening of the Lobito Wetland Centre
The CIOMA–Lobito Wetland Centre was established in 2025 through cooperation between WSFI and ADAMA to address the lack of local infrastructure for bird monitoring, environmental education, and wetland conservation. The project involved acquiring and converting three shipping containers into a functional centre with a birdwatching deck, basic equipment, and supporting facilities. The centre was formally inaugurated on 11 October 2025 during World Migratory Bird Day, with participation from local authorities, environmental institutions, and civil society.
The Inauguration was immediately followed by training sessions and field visits to strengthen local capacity in waterbird identification and counting. The centre began full operation with a dedicated team focused on education, monitoring, and site management, supported by private security. Its creation aims to generate long‑term ecological data, reinforce conservation action, and anchor Lobito as a key regional hub for wetland research and awareness in Angola. The commitment Partners (including international Partners) is key to ensure that the facility will contribute meaningfully to safeguarding migratory species and informing future environmental policy.
