CIOMA and EVOA Collaborate for World Migratory Bird Day Celebration in Angola and Portugal

Angola & Portugal, 2024

In an exciting global partnership, CIOMA, a wetland centre under development in Lobito, Angola, and EVOA, a well-established wetland centre in Portugal, joined forces to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD). The event aimed to strengthen cooperation between the two centres along the East Atlantic Flyway (EAF) while promoting migratory bird conservation among youth and local communities.

CIOMA and EVOA engaged 120 children and arranged for a remote session to jointly learn about migratory birds and their habitats. The children sahred information on species present in both regions toconnect with their peers in an interactive dialogue. The joint celebration was part of a broader effort to raise awareness about the threats faced by migratory birds, particularly in the context of declining insect populations, and to foster international cooperation for their protection.

In addition to the educational exchange, CIOMA hosted a birdwatching excursion for 40 street boys in Lobito and Luongo wetland areas, with the aim of shifting their perspective on migratory birds and promoting conservation efforts. By linking young people across continents and engaging marginalized groups, the project offered a unique opportunity to build lasting connections and inspire future conservation leaders.
